Picture taken August 1953  Notice how thin I was?

The above photograph is a picture of me operating a brand new Storm Vulcan Cam grinder in August of 1953.  I had been in business since January 1953, building racing engines.  I was unable to purchase two camshafts that were alike for my own racing engines.  Therefore, I purchased this cam grinder to make my own cams for my own racing engines.  I considered myself a good machinist and knew how to make two parts alike.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever believe that the purchase of this machine was a total disaster.  It took all of my skill, and a good portion of my days, trying to make two camshafts alike.  Two years later I was somewhat successful.  In fact so successful in making good camshafts, that I discontinued the engine building business.

I eventually acquired three more used Storm Vulcan cam grinders, as bad as they were, and made them work by highly modifying each of the four machines.

In the early 1960's I discovered another brand of cam grinder, and purchased one with the understanding that I would make no payments for one year or until the machine was satisfactory for my use.  This machine was one of the very first Van Norman cam grinders.  I eventually owned more than twenty of these machines.  Most of which I bought used.  Only after the middle 1960's did I sell the four Storm Vulcan Cam grinders for a total of $2000, to a gentleman by the name of Joe Lunati.  I was glad to get rid of these four pieces of junk!  I warned Joe that these machines were worn out and junk, and suggested that he remanufacture the machines before using them.  he did not!  He put them into production immediately.

Picture taken early 1960's at a trade show in Miami Beach, FL.
