Harvey,

I enjoyed your recent phone call and was pleased to see that you are still spreading the good word about camshafts and valvetrains. I'd hate to think that all that knowledge had gone into retirement. The fact that your cam school's have been a sell-out comes as no surprise to me. As one of the fortunate few who had you as a tutor during my years with Crane Cams West (1977-84) I know the value of your knowledge. I still use it frequently. In retrospect my years with you at Crane were some of the most enjoyable, informative, and rewarding of the 30 I've now spent in the High Performance industry. So I just wanted to acknowledge that publicly while taking the time to say "Hi". Keep up the good work. Henry Walther, Director of Sales & Marketing, Racepak Data Systems

Harvey and Maxine,

Hope you are all healthy and doing well. Thank you for spending the time with me during our visit several years ago. It's really special when someone with your talent and experience takes the time to talk with a young engineer. Contrary to popular belief we don't all "know-it-all" when we leave the university! Tanya, Hanna, and I are doing well in Germany. The experience is invaluable, and my employer has a very nice engine design and test facility. Everyone here has been very kind to us. No red tape in the business, just good engineering work.

Respects,

Steve Weinzierl Dr. Schrick GmbH

Dear Harvey: I would like to add my voice to the chorus of those expessing there affection and appreciation. Perhaps the greatest tribute one can offer another is to recount how that person has touched the lives of others in a positive way. In your case, Harvey, the list is long and grows every day. You continue to be an innovator, advancing the art and science of cam design. I wish you continued success, health and happiness.

With Warmest Regards, Chris Yohpe

Hello Harvey,

It was good to talk with you in the last months. It sure has been a busy time setting up our business here in the states. Although Tanya and I enjoyed the experience in Germany, its good to be home. I hope all is going well for you and Maxine. I'll try to keep in touch, and I hope you'll do the same. We would appreciate any engine component design business that you could direct our way. We are relatively unknown in the states, and its been difficult getting a start.

I am so glad to see you are still leading the way for the next generation of engine builders. I pored over your catalogs in the 1970s as I was building my small block Chevy. A number of years ago you wrote an article which appeared in the Crane Cams catalog about designing camshafts for supercharged engines. Is that article available?

Harvey, Thanks for the brief historical sketch of aftermarket cam production and design in the U.S. The technical info on this site is valuable as well. I work as an historian of motor sport (I edited Smokey Yunick's memoirs) and can testify that getting straight info on real performance engineering can be difficult. Thanks for your help! Harvey: I was hired by you and your crew in 1982 for the position of Heat Treat Manager and was sent to Muskegon Michigan to help close the company of Universal Cams, and relocating it to Crane Cams of Daytona. Upon arriving there and seeing the dungeon of a facility, I thought I had died and gone to HELL. After relocating the Heat Treating equipment to the Daytona Plant and working there with the personel that worked for the best company in Florida, I quickly found out that instead of Hell, I was in Heaven. That was probably the best nine to ten years of my career until I was called into the front office and terminated for an unknown reason. This was shortly after you had gotten fired from your own business. When I asked the question as to why I was picked to be terminated, I was told by two of the fabulous four, that they did not need my expertise any longer as I had trained every man in the Heat Treat to operate every piece of equipment and there was no need for me any longer. At this time I was devistated. Getting discharged was my reward after the long hours and work and the improving of already top quality products by eliminating over $300,000.00 of scrap per year each year and making the company more profitable. After this I went on to be a Plant Manager and eventually a General Manager of a top notch comercial heat treating company in Florida. If it had not been for you, "Harvey" being the main one to push for my being hired along with Grayson Maule, "Rest His Soul", I would not have had the opportunity to suceed with my long term goal of being totally in charge of a comercial plant. You, Harvey and Grayson will never be forgotten by me for the things that you did for the employees of the great Company of Crane Cams. I will close by saying that this is no longer a company that I tell people that I used to work for. Without you and Grayson at the helm it is no longer the place it used to be.

Harvey, To me, you were always a great man--your way of doing things--precison, attention to detail--ok is not good enough and your BOW ties hahah I loved them. You intimidated me in my early days when I had to go into your office, seeing you sitting behind your huge desk, looking up and saying--well, what do you want, I am busy, can't you see that. I used to tremble inside until one day I ran into you in the hall and you told me Bob I am only trying to get you to think quicker--I like you. From that day forward, I was never affraid to go into your office again. Well maybe a few times hahaha. I always looked up to you and you taught me a lot about doing things right, and for that i will be eternally grateful. I also remember getting ready to go home for the evening and you getting a hold of me and handing me a camshaft that had to go to Maxwell at chrysler and I took it to the airport and sent it by delta dash. So when I heard Maxine had passed, If I would have had to come from anywhere, I would be there. I have missed you and my job with you for all of these years and have wondered many times if you knew the real reason I was let go. I had found out and seen my my own eyes a lot of your product going out the backdoor( if you know what I mean) I reported this to Dave smith--A week later I was let go. I would not have missed today for anything. May GOD bless and keep you safe, your long time friend bob urban

Hello Mr. Crane, I would like to again express my condolences of Maxines passing. Losing ones family members is a tough chew, but we need to move forward and I'm sure that you are a man who will be able to keep his chin up. Your assistance to me in selecting a cam for my Ford AA truck was most appreciated and I have since been recommending others contact you for their cam selections for their Model A's. They all seem to have a differnet need, subsequntly I felt that your experience and those recommendations of so many made you the canidate for them. Again thank you for being so accomodating and informative. Alan Wernstrum

I stumbled across your web site while searching for specs on a "Michigan cam" (NOS) I inadvertantly acquired on Ebay (it was mislabeled) for my 84 Buick Skyhawk turbo. I can't begin to tell you how excited I was when I realized this was actually "your web site". My hot rod days were in the 70s to early 80s. I always used your cams. They were the absolute best! Glad to see you are still involved with the business. Kind of gets in your blood and you can't get away from it! If you ever get up to Wisconsin, look me up. I'll buy you lunch and we'll go to the mud drags or something!

Hi Harvey, I was pleasantly surprised to come across your guest book. It was nice to see some familiar names and some nice comments about my dad. I worked many years at Crane, and enjoyed all of them. I am sorry to hear of Maxine's passing. She was always a funny lady. Wanted to let you know that my mom passed away on Sunday. She had been ill for quite some time, battling cancer and Alzheimers. Hope you are well. Have a great Christmas. Laura Maule Handt

Mr. Crane, Its probably been close to 30 years since I have seen you while you worked on the Hallandale Rotary Christmas Sleigh. I never realized until I did a search for your name online that you were no longer still with the company that carries your name. I just had to sign your guestbook as it seems the times where I find someone who knew my father are few and far between. Sincerely, Harold Shaw, Jr.

Hello Harvey! I cannot hardly believe it has been a year since you lost Max. It seems like just yesterday Maxine was calling me "Jamie" and giving me instructions that were exactly like what my own mom used to! I'm happy to see that you are doing well, and that this time has helped you cope with your loss. I especially enjoy our Saturday morning sessions and having completed the writing and editing of "Chapter One" of your book. Actually, there's so much information crammed into that first chapter that it begs for separation into 2-3 chapters, and I will tackle that very soon. For anyone reading this Guest Book I strongly recommend you take a look at Chap One. If you at all value the very special man it's about - HJC - then I know you will enjoy reading it. I'll see you soon. Regards, Jim Hill

Harvey, You might be interested in learning that my book Damn Few Died In Bed, the autobiography of the late Andy Dunlop, tells of his valve spring experiments with Michael C. Turkish of Eaton Corp. although I didn't know Turkish's name at the time because Andy couldn't remember it and nobody at Eaton could tell me. It just came to light today and I found your site in searching for the book Turkish wrote. Tom Saal

Harvey: Thanks to you and "Stormy The Dog" we've discovered all sorts of new things in your neighborhood! We've discovered (Sometimes several times oer walk!) things like all the cats who inhabit your end of Spruce Creek Fly-In, most of the squirrels brave enough to come to ground during our walks, various birds and even a few of the native dogs. My sister who lives in Edgewater, FL called me tonight to tell me Crane Cams had closed. She knew you were no longer affiliated with the company. She did know we have talked Harvey Crane-Crane Cams for years. My husband, Gene Wheeler, has bought many cams and did all the drag racing back in late 50's and early 60's on the streets and midnight drags out at the old dump. I am sure you all raced at the same places. He drove a red & white 56 Crown Vic. We also lived in Hallandale and our kids went to Hallandale Elementary. Mildred and I were room mothers when David and my son (Mickey)Michael were in the 6th grade. In all of my reading tonight from the website, I did not read about the plane crash in the ocean with you and your family! Gene passed away 7 years ago 2-23-02. We moved to Alabama in 1975 and he open a garage. He love to tinker with the old cars. I still love "the sound" and you know what that is like. It was a pleasure to read about the the guys from Medley, Hialeah and there was a track in West Hollywood also. I remembered all the names and still hear of some today. I wish you and your family the best. I am sorry for the loss of your mate and pet. I am glad you got another puppy. I did the same thing.

Mr. Crane: I was born and raised in S.Fla. My Dad was an Architect in Broward, Dade and Palm Beach counties. I read the first section of your book. I can't tell you how many memories of those S. Fla. tracks your words brought back. I was a gearhead from birth but my Dad had no interest. I would beg him into submission to take me to Miami-Holliwood Speedway, to Plam Beach Speedway and Daytona. He was a great father and would walk with me patiently while I looked at every car with great interest. As a kid I was always looking for the cars and dragsters I saw in Hot Rod, Hot Rodding and Super Stock magazines. Most of the time I did not see those cars...I had no idea how far off the beating path S. Fla. was. I had savere asthma as a child and could not do much. Baseball and other activities were out of the question. So I read everything about engines, racing, engine prep. One of the things I read cover to cover including all of the cam specs was a Crane Cam catalog. I remember it had a picture of my Dad's friend Hank Langsencamp's V-drive race boat "The Steeler". I also remember seeing that boat at Mr. Langsencamp's business Steel Fabricators in Pompano Beach and I thought it was the coolest thing. I still have that Crane Cams Catalog packed away with a bunch of my car books. I bet you never thought your catalog would be entertainment for a little kid who spent most of his childhood in and out of Broward Genenral Medical Center. Thank you for your time, Bill Reilly Bill Reilly Toyota

Hello again Harvey, I called you this morning just looking for any info I could find about getting a old Crane"ZIP" cam made.Maybe you remember?I had no idea what had happen with you and crane cams.I took your advice and read your web page and I was not shocked to see a small group of 10 people decided to "let you go"form the Co.This makes me sick that you got "NO RESPECT"from people no doubt that you had trusted to run your business.Harvey the whole USA has lost RESPECT for what got them here to start with.I really enjoyed talking with you and hope you don't mind if I call again?BTW I didn't find the timing card for the ZIP-518 part#538302 or any info from the Crane web site.I'll call your friend Charlie in Arden,NC in hopes he can help me get a few of these ZIP cams made. Thanks Again, Rick Smith.Close to Wood Bros.in patrick co VA

Harvey, I am so sorry to hear about Max. Steve Edens called me and told me Max had died. I didn't know you had this site. Very glad I found it. I was looking at Autoweek today and found out that Crane Cams had closed its doors. Very sad, I really enjoyed working for Crane Cams from 1973 in Hallandale to 1986 in Daytona Beach. I worked there for exactly 13 years and loved every minute of it. I still go into racing withdrawls. I think I need a nitro fix. I stood out on that start line for many years at the drag races. I have to tell you, it brought tears to my eyes reading everything that was written to you. Take care and keep doing what you are doing Susie

Thanks Harvey for peaking my interest in aviation, and ham radio. Many years ago, I was hired by Maxine to cut the grass, and do other various landscaping for your home in Davie, FL. Hello Mr.Crane I am a little guy out here in this big world,Yeally I am 54,In the years past,I have never seen the failures with flat tappet cams.I do understand the problems with oil today.I do see why there would be some problems with engines being run with high oil changes and long times at an idle.I seem to still have failures with cams that donot make it off the dyno.I have been told a hundred stories from other cam grinders. There has to be somrthing more to this due to the fact that they are very humble to make the cam good.I am not pointing fingers at any one due to the fact that this seems to be a problem industry wide.I just would like a honest answer to this problem. It seems even if you follow all the guidelines they offer, you still have failures.I am a old school guy that has used your cams when you were still with crane cams without any problems. When I was a teen you just installed a cam and went to Mcdonalds to get some fries.Thank You for many years of making good products for me and every one who enjoyed going fast and having a good running car.

what a mess.gladd you are still doing your thing.I have used your equipment for it seems like forever, I still have a new R296 for my small block mopar from the mid 70's.at this point I dont know if I will ever get to use it.I an retired now and slightly into air cooled vw stuff.my 2332 cc vw (air cooled) is in need of a new type of rocker.but I dont know where to get a bar of rocker extruesion so I can make some hydrolic rockers.(small hyd lash ajusters in the rocker)with the expantion of these engines+cromoly push rods+ceramic thermol barrier on pistons, chambers, valves,ex ports. It dosent expand like it normaly does.witch makes it hard to get a consistant valve setting, along with strong springs,.005 cam flex from oppasite cyl&same cyl valves I need to have a bout a -.003 to -.005 lash, yes thats a minus lash. it spins real good for 4-6 sec ,enough time to build some heat, expand the cyl & close the valves.then fires right up.runs a little rough for a minute or so. but you can never get them all"right" so I am going to build me some hydrolic rockers.I am a performance machinest, engine builder, fabricator, with cnc mill & manual mill experance.I have a bridge port manual mill on the way(used in great shape) if I had a cnc mill I probly would make them & market them.ALL air cooled vw's need them.but mostly mine. can you point me in the right direction so I can check out some profiles of rocker arm extruesions & buy some? thanks for your time & years of service & great products. mark tucker

I have bought and sold hundreds of CRANE cams products over the years and I believe that America's bean counters are going to be the death of us. I am sorry to hear such a story and my thoughts and congratulations go out to Harvey Crane and I would like to thank him for the best products money could buy during his reign as the King of Camshafts. THANKS HARVEY. I am glad I wasn't born any later because in my lifetime I have seen the Auto industry go from bigger and longer to junk and junkier, and I for one miss the good old days of do your best and sell the best you can build.

What a sad thing to read. As a teenager in the 1960's, Crane was everywhere. Crane had the best name in valve-train components and camshafts. I remember removing a General Kinetics cam my engine builder stuck in my Hurst Rambler engine, and then switching back to Crane and seeing a huge power increase. I still have boxes of Crane springs from a Boss 302 engine I ran in the early 70's. It's sad to see an American legend like Crane disappear. Wall Street is just out of control. Hurst is going down the tubes for service(they don't even ship lock nuts for shift balls with their knobs and shifters now), Crane is gone. Sad days.

Hello Mr. Crane, Sorry to hear that Crane is no longer under your wise guidence. You probably won't remember this but somewhere about 1985 we sent you a BMW in-line 6 cam blank. We supplied complete air flow data and the rest was up to Crane. We waited and waited, more than 6 months for this "Freak" BMW project to get some attention. My partner finally had to call you personally to see if we could get it finished. You spray welded up the journals and lobes and ground us up a real, one of a kind, winner. We ran that cam for years and held every speed record in the class. This was not a car, but a 2.5 liter modified, 3 point hydroplane! Mr. Crane, a belated Thank you and remember, you are not only King of the Road, you are also King of the Water! Mike Ambrogio In Cahoots Racing A-36

I am in awe ...Mr crane is the man. he has helped me with 25 year old cams and inspired me to learn more about camshaft in general...I am 50 years old and i am just learning cams....he also state that rotella oil that all cam manufactories say you must run because of parfen wax in the oil is a bunch of bs and to get oil from Bradpennracing.com ..they are the original oil company that made the real kendall oil not the kendall you buy now days but the kendall oil from the old days when you just about could kill a cam....Thank you Mr Crane and i will be calling you back sometimes for sure...I consider you a friend..a very smart one..LOL Greg Pratt

Hello! Sad to read about what happened to your company! Sitting here in Norway (in sacandinavia that is), I just found Your site on the web, and what a great site! Since I'm very interested in the early days of racing and Hot-Rodding, I am always searching the web for stories about people and racing in the U.S. Don't know how many articles I have read about the subject.. Imagine my surprise when I found out (tonight) that You knew Ed Winfield! Don't know the exact word to say about Mr.Winfield. The closest thing must be that I'm very, very impressed by what he achieved. Virtually out of "nothing".. But,- the same goes for all of You Pioneers out there. Yourself included! Wish You all the best! Sincerely H.K.Olsen (just a kid at 46)

Hello Harvey (The Original "Big Bird")! I've been browsing your recent e-mails and thought that those who view the site should know that Harvey J. I will write something more appropriate and send it to your webmaster, Bruce, so it can be posted on the Home Page of the website. -Jim Hill

Back in the spring of 1961, I was living at 1423 Hollywood Blvd; I dropped by your shop and you set me up with a cam for my '61 Belvedere 318" with a four-barrel. I promptly got locked up for speeding near your shop while racing a train along South Dixie Highway. Thanks anyway! A loyal customer of yours, Dave Coleman, owner of Performance Engineering in Summit Point, West Virginia was saddened to learn of you and your former company's problems. If you have a moment, perhaps you could give Dave a call. His number is(304)725-8333. I'm very glad to hear that you are still alive and kicking.

Hello Mr. Crane, I hope this note finds you well. I think this site is truly fabulous, and the story it tells. I am sure you know people I know, being from MoTown, and all of the Michigan history. I never had the pleasure of meeting you, however since I not only used your product but have trumpeted it for years, I am happy to say thank you. In the 1980's I worked for Michigan Performance Warehouse, aka Mayfair Auto, The Hi-Po Shop, for Jim Patrick. Although I left that industry as a career, I never left hot rodding. Our family currently campaigns drag cars ranging from our 1957 BelAir HT bracket car to Willys Gasser Coupes, and Nostalgia Funny. If it needs to go fast it needs a CRANE !! Best Wishes, The Timoszyk Family

I got the best advice I've ever gotten from Smokey... he said, "call Steve Eden at Crane, he'll get you as close as anyone can to the best power for your application"... and he did! Boats, street, drag, it just didn't matter. I was heartbroken when Crane was no more because I knew that I'd have to suffer through a lot of smoke and sunshine just to get an answer and even at that the answer wouldn't be what I'd come to expect from your products. Thank you for all that you did and thanks for creating a first rate company. Best regards... Greg

I always thought Crane Cams had the best insight into the rate of change of acceleration ( jerk) on their lobes than any of the other cam companies. This is what allowed their cams to be so easy on the valvetrain and achieve extended valvetrain life.

I opened my first speed shop, Bill's Speed Shop, in July 1966, while attending Northern Arizona University. The "shop" was located in a corner of my Dad's boat sales and repair business in Flagstaff, AZ. Attended one of the first SEMA shows at Dodger Stadium in LA; then subsequent shops in Anaheim and Las Vegas - when SEMA was still a high performance and racing industry organization. Feel that I am fortunate to have been in the industry since the 1960's, and to have met many of the pioneers of the industry including Harvey Crane, Jr. Recently retired after 24+ years with Dana Corporation in the internal engine parts divisions, including Perfect Circle Piston Rings and Clevite Engine Bearings.

Harvey: Well, I see you posted the "Survival At Sea" story we worked on. I'm very pleased that you decided to post this on your web site. I'm hoping that all who read this will understand what a profound life experience this was for you and all who were aboard the Six C's that afternoon. Hopefully, your experience and lesson learned about surviving an ocean sinking may one day save someone else's life. Thank you for sharing this, first with me, and now with all who visit your web site. -Jim Hill

Mr. Crane, It was great to talk with you this morning. Once again, thanks for all your contributions to motorsports thru your paramount valvetrain technology. It's unfortunate what happened with you & your company, but it seems sometimes things like these happen to the best. It kind of insenses me to hear other cam company's claims on absolute leadership of valvetrain technology, when most of the leadership really resides with you personally. I'm enjoying my Crane reverse cam rotation grind for use with my Isky 2-gear drive, and especially your innovative iron gear distributor drive pressed on a solid roller core - Genius!! Good to hear Chase & Bob can still help me out with another reverse grind. Thanks for taking the time to chat with me - it was an honor. I wish you all the best, and may God bless! -Mark

I have a two fold interest in your site, the first being that I am working on my '83 Mustang GT (original owner)and second that I am working on some equipment issues dealing with my own marine propulsion experiments. I recently bought a legendary Crane cam for my Mustang application (272 H10), and was looking to find a way of balancing basic performance with mileage considerations (and also be able to retain good engine life with the stock bottom end). While looking for information relating to valve timing (and setting drive gear or chain advance) I discovered your marvelous harvey CRANE website, and I am eagerly learning about your well documented place within this industries history. I truly enjoy your writing and your skill as an educator. It is legendary inventors and innovators such as yourself that team up to create the evolving pioneering culture that helps keep the apex of this art in America, and to the degree this culture is compromised (by whatever means), the weighted center of this culture of leadership would naturally fall elsewhere. I am therefore grateful to whomever is now making the CRANE CAMS components generation I now have to experiment with, and to you, the most respected Harvey Crane, who now has time to create his record and set perminent his footprint in history. I had a past membership in SAE after I left college in 1974 (therefore respect the standards you quote). Currently I am a member of SNAME, and the patents I build engines for (and under) may be found if one GOOGLES my name. You are not alone in terms of being forced out of your company (they tried this with Henry Ford), and it seemingly is common that this social and marketing mistake is not realized until its sadly too late. I thank you for this comments block, and I truly look forward to learning more from the master. HWH 01/26/2011

Hi Harvey, I was talking with an old friend this weekend and she reminded me about my engine and cam design days. I had heard about the loss of Crane Cams but didn't have a clue what happened - so I thought I'd check your site - so now I know. It's still hard for me to comprehend how, what I regarded as the most successful cam company in history, could suddenly evaporate. One thing she pushed me about was getting (buying) back the master for my "Velvet Hammer" (Yah, I know its corny) VH256R intake lobe. Dave Bly had told me I could buy it back from Crane at any time since I had "exclusive rights" on it. Now that the original company is "defunct", do you know who I might contact to buy-back my master? She thinks I should frame it and hang it on my office wall above my old "Cam Doctor". You also mentioned that you still do precision cam measurements and evaluate them. I'd really be interested if you could make a pass on the VH256R design. You may remember that I was using Jim Amick's software for the final data table generation. Anyway, I'm glad to see you're "hanging in there"! I just turned 68, retired and feeling fine. It would be nice to hear from you. -Art

Mr. Harvy Crane, Hello sir,I worked at Crane Cams in the late 1980's till soon after you were [let go]. I worked first with the people that machined rollor rockers and moved over to the development area with the engine dyno. [what a blast that was]. I was good friends with you son Steve but have lost contact in these many years. After me being let go from Crane Cams you hired me to clean and paint some of the first equipment you used in the bussiness. This was done in the hanger at your house in Daytona. Your wife use to make iced tea for me. It's to bad the workers got robbed of there monies like 401K. The company I just last worked for for 21 pluse years is closing too. This compamy was over 100years old[NEW Process Gear]. Magna Powertrain bought it. I see that you will be 80 soon, well good for you and many more years. No matter what people say I am still proud that I worked for Crane Cams and my 74 Chevelle was used in the HOW TO INSTALL A CAMSHAFT VIDEO. I could ramble all day on this, please say hi to Steve for me. Stay healthy and may GOD Bless.

Dear Mr. Crane, We have never meant or spoke to one another but I have been told a few story's about you as my mother remembered them and had some news paper clipings about yourself an some race cars you worked on around iowa with I think Jim Mallard an Cotten Hodges. Two things that I was told was how young you were an how amazing talented you were. an the car hauling that didn't make it under the overpass down by marion Ia an toke the cars on top off. One was a car my dad raced 777 Bob McIlrath. What great story's I was told. My dad died in 61 in a plane crash but my mom is still alive an going stong at 93. I have alway's worked dirt cars an have always when I had my way used your stuff because I knew it was the best just by the way I was told what kind of person you were. I end this by hoping you have a great an happy retierment an that your health is well for many years.

Hello Harvey and congratulations on "retirement" or at least your brand of it. From my first contact with you I have considered you a true champion of the Model A guys as even though you certainly have progressed well beyound the old bangers you still carry the information on them and I believe still have a spark for the old four holers. I champion you when those who are looking for a cam and refer them to your site to look up the Model A grinds so that they can find exactly what they are looking for. Enjoy your "touring retirement" as that's what its all about, a little kick back time to refresh the spirit and rev up the ideas. Have fun. Alan the popcorn man

To all I meet while employed at Crane a fond hello. To Harvey sorry for your lose and I hope your health is good. It is a shame that the Company held together by many and pulled apart by a few fell to such end. If anyone is interested the market place could use a good US Company with creditable products to drum out the crap that is made today. If Jim Hill reads this call me it would be great to talk about the past and learn what the future holds.
